USAID's Justice for All Program holds training on Legal Aid Office Management and Experience Sharing for District Legal Aid Officers

On August 17-18, 2016, USAID’s Justice for All Program (JFA) and the National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) jointly organized training on Legal Aid Office Management and Experience Sharing in Dhaka. Sixteen Judges who are working as District Legal Aid Officers from  16 districts participated in the training and learned about how to efficiently administer office, financial disbursement and report on expenditures of Government fund, how to implement DLAC Improvement plan, techniques of Citizen Awareness and DLAC monitoring mechanism, and an overview on DLAC case database. District Legal Aid Officers also drafted suggested slogans for National Legal Aid Day 2017.


NLASO Director Mr. Malik Abdullah Al-Amin presided over the training and was joined by the Chief of Party Mr. Harold D. Dampier, Jr., JFA Deputy Chief of Party Ms. Sharmeen Farouk, NLASO Deputy Director Mr. Mohammad Al-Amin Matubbar and Rokibul Islam, Assistant Director Yasin Habib and NLASO Finance Expert Mr. Iqbal Ali Ashraf. The training program was designed to provide practical knowledge about proper financial management of legal aid offices, improvement plan and legal right and awareness plan to the Legal Aid Officers. The Legal Aid Officers also shared their Progress, Best Practices and Challenges identified with the peer group members.      


Ms. Taohida Akter, Legal Aid Officer of Cox’s Bazar commented, “This is my first workshop after joining as DLAO and I am very pleased to attend the workshop and learn from JFA and my seniors officers and also share my challenges and experiences while seeking solutions from other colleagues”. Ms. Rawshan Jahan from Manikganj commented, I am grateful that JFA invited the non-pilot districts DLAO like me because I learned so much about DLAC office management and will use the improvement plan in my day to day work.”            


JFA provides technical assistance to improve legal aid services at the national, district, and local levels under its Objective 1: Strengthen Legal Aid Service Delivery. Assistance is designed to ensure efficient management of the legal aid office and caseload; enhance the quality and responsiveness of service delivery by the legal aid office and panel lawyers; activate local-level committees for referral and awareness at the grassroots level; and conduct public outreach and information campaigns on the availability of legal aid services. JFA is currently active in thirteen districts: Dhaka, Mymensingh, Tangail, Munshiganj, Rajshahi, Bogra, Pabna, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Khulna, Jessore, Cox’s Bazar, and Maulvibazaar.
