On September 24, 2017, USAID’s Justice for All Program (JFA) organized a strategic dialogue with law faculty of Daffodil International University in Dhaka. Mr. Kazi Yasin Habib, Assistant Director, National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO), Mr. Rajesh Chowdhury, District Legal Aid Officer, Dhaka, and Mr. Md. Riaduzzaman, Head, Department of Law, Daffodil International University, facilitated the dialogue. 70 participants attended the dialogue, including faculty members, law students and Professor A. M. M. Hamidur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science of Daffodil International University.

Mr. Rajesh Chowdhury noted that “partnership between the District Legal Aid Committee and law faculties is essential to sensitize law students on government legal aid services and prepare them as future panel lawyers, judges, and academics.” Mr. Kazi Yasin Habib, Assistant Director, NLASO recommended that, “Government legal aid services should be included in the syllabus”, putting special emphasis on its growing importance. He also advised law students to get involved in the Student Legal Aid Forum (SLAF) and work directly with NLASO.

Professor A. M. M. Hamidur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science of Daffodil International University, expressed his hope that a strategic partnership between the DLAC and NLASO would continue and benefit law students and faculty members.

While participating in the dialogue, law students and faculty members shared experiences, asked questions, and reached key decisions. The Law Department will prepare a report and submit it to the Vice Chancellor of Daffodil International University to institutionalize a partnership with NLASO and the Dhaka District Legal Aid Committee. The law students will engage more with SLAF to play an active role in government legal aid services by learning, sharing and visiting courts and communities to disseminate legal aid information among the public.
