Women Lawyers Conduct Advocacy Dialogue with Rangpur Bar Association

On July 30, 2017, USAID’s Justice for All Program (JFA) andthe Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association (BNWLA) organized a ‘Women Lawyer Professional Dialogue with Rangpur District Bar Association’ in Rangpur. The event was conducted through JFA’s Women in Justice Initiative to createthe enabling environment forwomen lawyer’s capacity development through effective action byBar Association. 36 lawyers, including leaders of Rangpur District Bar Association, attended in the event.


Advocate Kohinoor Begum, Divisional Head of BNWLA, moderated the Dialogue and emphasized the importance of working together to overcome obstacles and to create a women-friendly working environment in court.


During the Dialogue, women lawyers shared the professional challenges and difficulties they face and urged Bar leaders to play a more proactive role in supporting the mitigation of these challenges and difficulties and enhancing their professional capacity.Advocate Rezeka Sultana Fancy stated “Women lawyers face embarrassing situations due to unhygienic toilet facilities and lack of common room.” She added that the “Bar Association should come forward to solve those problems with utmost priority.”


Bar Complex Affairs Secretary Advocate Md. Ziaul Hasan Zia remarked, “This event is significant, as for the first time we are sitting along with women lawyers to discuss about their problems and to pave the way forresolving those.We are committed to ensure pleasant environment for professional development of women lawyers. We will be able to meet their requirements once the new bar building is in place.”


The event isone of the many events organized to mobilize and empower women legal professionals under JFA’s Women in Justice Initiative.Through dialogue sessions, discussion meetings, and a problem-solving forum, JFA is working with local stakeholders, including both women and men, to advance gender equity and empower legal professionals and law students throughout Bangladesh.
